Storytelling Arts of Indiana promotes the art of storytelling by creating opportunities in Indiana for diverse audiences of all ages to listen and share stories and by showcasing tellers who entertain and inspire.
Storytelling Arts of Indiana was founded in 1987. Three passionate individuals had the vision of reintroducing audiences in central Indiana to the power of the spoken word. Their spirit attracted volunteers and donors together to celebrate the first Hoosier Storytelling Festival in 1988. Since that time, Storytelling Arts has grown to offer year-round programming throughout the state. In 1997, Storytelling Arts of Indiana hosted the National Storytelling Conference in Indianapolis and received the Regional Service Award from the National Storytelling Network in 1998. In 2004, Storytelling Arts of Indiana received the NUVO Cultural Vision Award presented by NUVO Weekly. In celebration of our 20th birthday, the book "The Scenic Route: Stories from the Heartland" was published by the Indiana Historical Society Press with generous support from Frank and Katrina Basile and we kicked-off the endowment campaign, The Story Lives On. In celebration of our 25th birthday, we initiated the Life Stories Project in collaboration with WFYI and the Indiana Historical Society and moved Ghost Stories to Crown Hill Cemetery.
