Description
I majored in painting in college, and minored in art history. My historical place in the art world is something I'm very conscious of and I draw much of my style from the Byzantine period. My faith has always been my source of inspiration both as a person and as an artist. As an Orthodox Christian, I strive to combine my knowledge as a western oil painter with the theology and artistic design of the ancient Byzantine Orthodox Church. Most of my artwork is made with oils and gold leaf on either a panel or canvas. Much of the imagery includes abstractions of ancient iconographic images with modern day painting techniques. Another predominant subject matter is physical objects, spaces, and events surroundng the church life today. Such themes include incense burners, interiors of churches, wedding ceremonies, etc. Consistency in color palette is important to me as I work in series. The intense, yet often very dark colors mainly include red and blue, with gold interspersed as well. I occasionaly work with pastel on paper also, investigating similar imagery with different mediums to see how they are best expressed. I have studied the art of iconography under the hand of a full-time modern iconographer in the Orthodox Church and continue to work on icons on the side, which helps me understand my history better and influences my oil paintings as well.
Background
I have been interested in art my whole life. I didn't pursue it formally until college, however. I began with a major in art education, but as I immersed myself in the life of a studio artist, I fell in love with the practice of artmaking. I changed my major to painting, although I enjoy working with many art forms. Drawing is another practice I especially like. I was educated at Herron School of Art and Design in Indianapolis, IN (a part of I.U.P.U.I) and studied full time for fve years, minoring in art history as well. I graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. I then moved to Ohio after getting married and took an intensive week-long class in iconography with a seasoned iconographer in Michigan. I continue to practice art in my studio at home. I have been involved in shows regularly over the past six years, both with my school, and with various churches.
